I know that many people have a distorted opinion of me because of past newspaper stories which, as I am naturally diffident, I have been reluctant to redress. Every story has two sides however - and on 14th December 2009, on the BBC, I get the chance to tell you my side, with my long-standing friend Clare Balding.

“I have always been too modest to think anyone would be interested in a book about me. I was going to write one when I retired, but I do not enjoy signing a book that, whilst it's about me, is not my full story. Having my face on the front makes people believe I have authored it. I am not happy about this, but that is what a biography is all about - secondhand information. I am looking forward to setting the record straight and hope to launch the book in a year's time - as long as I have won enough to justify it.”
